No I'm not refering to darwins theory, I'm talking about the game.
I doubt anyone here has played that game. It's a very deep game.... very... very.... deep. Competative, and very teamwork oriented. It's also deep. The graphics arent amazing, but it definatly is deep. The microphone plays a big role in it due to incredibly complex communication that needs to take place. It's also a very deep game. It features a very unique gameplay style on the aliens side. It's a pretty deep game. In fact, many people find it too teamwork and competition oriented. did I mention that this game is very deep? I don't think I did. let me clarify it: THIS GAME IS DEEP MAN!
It's an online game that runs off of the Half-Life 1 engine (steam as far as I know).
Its a game of Marines VS Aliens.
Objective of the games for Marines: To destroy the Aliens, and the Alien Hives.
Objective of the game for Aliens: To destroy the Marines and any sort of equipment that can bring in more re-enforcements, and to ensure that there is at least 1 hive in the area, or if there is no hive, to make one.
Sounds simple enough right? Technically? Yes.
But needless to say, with 2 very different forces fighting against each other:
(Marines VS Aliens)
(Guns VS Melee)
(Technology VS Evolution)
(Dictatorship VS Democracy)
It complicates things.
The ultimate goal as a marine is to kill the hive. but how do you do that? Obviously you can't run in with light machine guns, cut through dozens of creatures powerful enough to kill you in one hit, and destroy a hive.
The team has to get resources. Once they get these resources, the commander can distribute weapons, like shotguns, grenade launchers, and more beefy machineguns. Or the commander can strategically place certain equipment like turrets. Perhaps the commander wishes to take a different approach. Rather than hooking you up with a new weapon, he'll beef up the weapon you already have. Maybe the situation is completly different, and rather than trying to upgrade your weapons, he'll upgrade your armor. Maybe he'll place you in a cyborg suit. Who knows, perhaps he'll give the whole team Jetpacks.
However, this is not quite as simple as it sounds. After all, the Aliens are trying to get the same resources you are.
With these resources they can do quite some things too. Perhaps the alien will turn into a lerk. Maybe a fade, or a gorge. God forbid they turn into an onos or drop a hive. Maybe they'll drop offense chambers (alien turrets), maybe they prefer defense chambers (regeneration), perhaps they will spy on your and place sensory chambers.
The game becomes vicious. And at some points begins resembling rock, paper, scissors, except.... alot more complicated:
if the aliens get a resource tower, the marines will use their knifes to take it. if the marines take it, aliens will prevent the spread. If marines get heavy armor (cyborg armor), aliens need to evolve to onos (huge rhino-looking beast). If Aliens evolve into onos, the marines may want to get jetpacks. If the marines get jetpacks, the aliens may want to place webs. If the aliens get webs, the marines may was the get grenade launchers. if the marines get grenade launchers, aliens may want to get fades. If the aliens get fades, marines may want to get heavy machineguns, if the marines get heavy machineguns, the aliens will want another hive. If the aliens get another hive, marines want to place siege cannons to destroy the hives. If the marines try to place cannons, the aliens may want to place Offense Chambers (alien turrets) in siegable areas. If the aliens place Offense chambers, marines may want to get grenade launchers. etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
And it all go into an unbalanced loop where everyone needs lots of stuff that only more resources can get them. Since obviously neither team is going to get what they need, they will have to improvise, and work together. And it's that improvision, and teamwork that makes this game possibly the most competative game I've ever seen.
